Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Compute is a web service that provides bare metal and virtual machine (VM) compute capacity that delivers performance, flexibility, and control without compromise. Whether you need to run high-performance workloads, containerized applications, serverless functions, or legacy systems, OCI Compute has the right solution for you.
OCI Compute lets you provision and manage compute hosts, known as instances. You can create instances as needed to meet your compute and application requirements. After you create an instance, you can access it securely from your computer, restart it, attach and detach volumes, and terminate it when you're done with it.
OCI Compute offers both bare metal and virtual machine instances:
- Bare metal: A bare metal compute instance gives you dedicated physical server access for highest performance and strong isolation.
- Virtual machine: A virtual machine (VM) is an independent computing environment that runs on top of physical bare metal hardware. The virtualization makes it possible to run multiple VMs that are isolated from each other. VMs are ideal for running applications that do not require the performance and resources (CPU, memory, network bandwidth, storage) of an entire physical machine.
An OCI VM compute instance runs on the same hardware as a bare metal instance, leveraging the same cloud-optimized hardware, firmware, software stack, and networking infrastructure.
OCI Compute offers many benefits for your workloads, such as:
- Flexible and customizable: You can select the most appropriate type of instance for your applications based on characteristics such as the number of CPUs, amount of memory, and network resources. You can also customize your instances for specialized workloads and security requirements with features such as burstable instances, shielded instances, and extended memory VMs.
- High performance and scalability: You can achieve consistent high performance for your workloads with OCI Compute's low-latency network fabric, high-bandwidth local storage, and powerful processors. You can also scale your instances up or down as needed to meet changing demand.
- Cost-effective and reliable: You can optimize your costs by choosing a specific number of cores and the amount of memory to customize your workload needs. You can also take advantage of OCI's low pricing and predictable billing model. You can also ensure high availability and durability for your instances with OCI's fault-tolerant design and multiple redundancy options.
To get started with OCI Compute, you need to:
- Sign up for an Oracle Cloud account or log in to your existing account.
- Create a virtual cloud network (VCN) to connect your instances to the internet or other resources.
- Launch an instance by selecting a shape type, an image source, a VCN subnet, and other options.
- Connect to your instance using SSH or other methods.
- Manage your instance using the OCI Console, CLI, SDKs, or APIs.
For more information on how to use OCI Compute, see the documentation.
